Sepulchre by the Sea for Flute and Piano
PDF ONLY
Sepluchre by the Sea was written for Joeli Schilling in the summer of 2022 and revised in the fall of 2024 and was composed to show off Joeli’s artistry, our friendship, and as an encapsulation of this time in our lives. The summer of 2022 was a time of great transition in both of our lives- a season of personal discoveries and musical growth after our four years together at Texas Tech, tainted by a backdrop of political upheaval. We share an underlying dread and anger as we are still watching the rights of women, queer folks, and people of color being stripped by Christian extremists in power as I'm editing this in 2024. However the eve of the 2024 election brings a sliver of hope for a better tomorrow.
The music in Sepluchre by the Sea is inspired by Annabel Lee by Edgar Allen Poe and La Dispute’s Fall Down, Never Get Back Up Again. The darkness in Poe’s writing and the edge in La Disputes music are married over this 4 movement sonata. The first two movements form a recit and aria. The bells of an old church are heard as ‘waves crash contempt on the land’. The waves bring a dreamy yet delusional song that wanders farther out into the dark waters than anticipated. The last two movements are attacca, bridged by a boiling over of emotions, crying, screaming and shouting. The third movement is in a beaten and broken sonata form. The themes develop into a grave dancing craze until the recapitulation deconstructs the sonic landscape until in the last moments of the entire piece where we finally find peace at last.
