Love on Mars for Flute, Alto Sax, and Piano

$10.00

Love on Mars is the only way I can describe what it's like to be queer in West Texas. It's about finding beauty in an alien and hostile landscape. Lubbock is a place of great inspiration for me, while also being wicked and twisted! I quoted Holst’s Mars in a few ways, the signature 5/4 meter, some long ascending patterns, and some rhythmic gestures– these “masculine” ideas are juxtaposed to long florid lines that erupt then melt into a dreamy improvised cadenza. Love on Mars was commissioned by Christina Jennings and Nathan Mertens in the spring of 2024!
