Log Flume for Wind Ensemble
The log flume in its origin was an artificial channel used to transport lumber down a mountainside. However, in 1963, the first log flume ride, El Aserradero, was built by Arrow Dynamics at Six Flags Over Texas in Arlington. Riders sit in a log-shaped boat that traverses a winding course with a few smaller drops; the experience culminates with a larger descent and splashdown into a great body of water. My piece follows a similar form. I’ve made many trips to this park, only being 6 hours from where I grew up, and it still has some of my favorite rides. For one, Mr Freeze Reverse Blast Coaster is my number one coaster of all time (and I think it would make a great drag name)!! El Aserradero is symbolic of Six Flag history as well, Over Texas being the first six flags park. The Runaway mine train, also by Arrow Dynamics, is the oldest coaster in the park and is another favorite of mine, dipping into tunnels around Mr. Freeze!
While this park represents the history of the chain, closer to home Six Flags Fiesta Texas has a lot of the industry’s innovation. The Road Runner Express was the last mine train built by Arrow Dynamics. Wonder Woman Golden Lasso Coaster was the first single rail thrill coaster and The Batman was the first winged free spin coaster (riders sitting adjacent to the track rather than above or below). The log flume here, Bug Bunny’s White Water Rapids remains my favorite log flume, navigating a castle with a long meandering elevated section above the path! Log Flume (for wind ensemble) is a mid-tempo adventure full of meandering passages, drops, and interactions with the other rides. Log Flume was premiered by the Texas Tech Symphonic Wind Ensemble in 2022.
